Certificate of Achievement Automotive Mechanics
New Program
Automotive Technology (094800)
08/01/26
This course is an introduction for students with minimal to no background in the automotive field. The course covers the basic theory and operation of the automobile, and related systems such as engine cooling, lubrication, fuel injection, ignition, emissions, and more. The introduction to basic electricity covers batteries, starting, and charging systems. Through laboratory practices, this course also offers a practical introduction to automotive tools, diagnostic equipment, and minor maintenance and repair.
This new certificate of achievement aligns with Palomar’s mission, vision, and values by continuing to provide support of college and faculty initiatives that enhance the educational experience of Palomar College students and support the needs of today's automotive industry. Our curriculum of classes is being realigned into one degree in “Automotive Technology” and four (4) certificates of achievement to streamline our students' paths to completion and employment. This certification provides students with a path to completion in one year.

Palomar College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. While a supply gap exists for this occupation, the available LMI recommends proceeding with caution when developing a program because 1) entry-level earnings are above the living wage for the occupation and 2) a supply gap exists. However, there is a large number of programs that exist for the profession.
