Geographic Information Systems Program

The Geographic Information Systems program educates students in the skills needed to gather, manage, model, interpret, analyze, and display spatial data. Students who complete this program are prepared to obtain entry level positions in careers using Geographic Information Systems, such as crime analysis, ecology, marketing, forestry, demographics, transportation, and government. The courses use a variety of mapping and data collection methods, and provide training in industry standards, cartographic techniques, and developing technologies. This skillset is important for anyone entering a job in the Geosciences field.

The GIS and Technology Certificate of Achievement/ AS degree educates students in the skills needed to gather, manage, model, interpret, analyze, and display spatial data. Students who complete this program are prepared for careers in Geographic Information Systems, with specialized skills applicable to environmental consulting, technical drafting, cartographic production, surveying and geospatial programming. This program uses a variety of mapping and data collection methods, and provides training in industry standards, cartographic techniques, and developing technologies.

• Equip students with technical GIS skills including data entry, digitization, spatial modeling, and analysis
• Prepare students to conduct spatial analysis and effectively present results through maps, graphs, and tabular formats
• Enable students to create professional cartographic products that clearly communicate geographic information
• Train students in GIS database development and management following current industry standards

This 12-unit Certificate of Achievement is being submitted alongside an 18-unit Geographic Information Systems and Technology Certificate of Achievement/AS Degree. The 12-unit certificate is intended to be completed by students in 2 semesters and qualify them for entry level GIS work. While the 18-unit certificate and degree, allow students to specialize. in certain parts of GIS (Environmental Analysis, CAD Engineering, Surveying, or Programming).

The 12 unit certificate consists of four courses, recommended to be taken in this order:

· Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Techniques (3 units)

· Map Interpretation and Spatial Analysis (3 units)

· Data Acquisition and Management (3 units)

· Cartographic Design (3 units)

the 18 unit cert would stack two specialization courses (3-4 Units each) that let students focus their expertise in Environmental Consulting, Python programming, Java Script Programming, CAD integration, or Surveying. Students would pick two of the below for the certificate and add GE and other transferable electives to reach 60 units for an AS degree.
