Catalog Description
The Community Health Worker Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students for employment as a health professional in the medical, education, and health and wellness career field. It is possible to complete this certificate in one calendar year. The curriculum has been designed to equip the student with the background, both theoretical and practical to pursue a job promoting community health and education. Courses in nutrition, special populations, psychology/sociology, first aid, and lifelong physical activity will prepare the student for responsibilities in the field of health. The program will also expose students to other areas such as health education, healthcare services, gerontology, wellness promotion, pre-allied health, nutritional science, counseling/social advocacy services, public health, and medical fields.

Program Goal
The purpose of this certificate is to:
• Assist individuals and communities to adopt healthy behaviors.
• Conduct outreach for medical personnel or health organizations to implement programs in the community that promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health.
• Assist in providing information on available resources, provide social support and informal counseling, advocate for individuals and community health needs, and provide services such as first aid and blood pressure screening.
• Collect data to help identify community health needs.
Specific Objectives of Degree/Certificate:
Upon completion, students will:
1) Communicate knowledge of health, including proper nutrition, exercise, and health habits.
2) Design, develop, and implement health promotion programs, projects, literature, and educational materials.
3) Interact with the public by working with, communicating with, and teaching people.
4) Demonstrate sensitivity to a multi-cultural community.
5) Be able to influence the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors of community members decisions on healthy choices.
6) Integrate technology and utilize social media to promote innovative and creative healthy choices and behaviors.
