Goal of Program

CTE & Transfer

Include any other information you would like to share.
The Art Department at College of Marin does not offer any digital courses other than the two Digital Photography courses. In addition, no Graphic Design Degree or Certificates are offered in the Art Department. As a result, there are no duplicated courses, certificates, AA or AS degrees that are remotely similar to the Multimedia Studies Design Specialty courses that have been offered at College of Marin since 1998. The new GDES program will offer a Certificate of Achievement, an AA-T, and a COM AA Degree in Graphic Design. Graphic Design is a prevalent creative career. Initially graphic design was associated with printed material—design, layout, typography for printing and publishing. The growth of digital material increased the need for graphic designers by expanding the need for designers and graphic artists into multimedia professions—like mobile app design, and the need for UI and UX design for interactive content. This is content that was not associated with graphic design or did not yet exist. The growth of digital content has opened multiple occupations for graphic artists and designers. Because of the exponential growth of digital-related creative work, the job title for a Graphic Designer is customary, albeit with a job description that is quite varied. The Multimedia Studies program at College of Marin has provided a Design Specialty to serve the range of visual and graphic design occupations in the Bay Area since 1998. As a Design program within Multimedia Studies it has helped to train multimedia students as entry-level game developers, graphic designers, and web developers. The critical thinking required for all three multimedia specialties is necessary to become skilled professionals in the multimedia industry. As a Career Education program, preparation for entering the workforce is the primary goal of the Multimedia Studies (MMST) program. However, only one of the MMST courses is transferable within the major, all others are transferable as CSU electives. As a result, students that transfer to Cal State East Bay, Cal State Sacramento, San Francisco State, or San Jose State, are required to complete another two and one-half to three years to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in design. The creation of the Graphic Design Program will provide College of Marin students the ability to take Graphic Design (GDES) courses to earn a Certificate of Achievement, an AA-COM Degree, and an AA-T Transfer degree by completing the required ART and GDES courses, along with the required GE/IGTSC courses necessary to earn a degree. As an applied art AA degree, the Graphic Design program will establish aa career pathway within the Career Education department with appropriate SAM and TOP codes. As a predominately 100% online program, it will increase the completion rate and success of COM ART, GDES and MMST students, while also raising the awareness of the CE classes, like the Multimedia Studies program at IVC. The cross-listing of existing GDES and MMST courses to create a new the AA Degrees and a new Certificate of Achievement, College of Marin will improve student success, and transfers to universities without any additional service units for instruction, and provide another example of a program at College of Marin, that is student centered.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
