Program Requirements Narrative

As part of its mission, West Valley College is committed to supporting students in reaching career goals. This certificate provides opportunities for entry level careers in the Bay Area that require human resources skills. In consultation with the Business Department at West Valley College, and the Business, Accounting, & Real Estate Advisory Board, we examined the most relevant and sought after skills for emerging human resources professionals. The rationale for developing this certificate can best be explained by analyzing the entry level jobs in the Bay Area that require a critical understanding of human resource support and management. Through our advisory board and from the business community we learned that there is a need for individuals with human resources skills who can provide important support in the management of human resources in a business. Thus, this certificate addresses the inter-disciplinary skills required for emerging human resource management, and support jobs and careers as evidenced in job postings and employment data.

Please see the labor market data that summarizes growth in this industry; as an emerging field, there is currently no measurable results. Anticipated growth and demand for professionals in the Bay Area who possess skills in the finance and accounting field were the main reasons for developing this certificate.

No other college in the Silicon Valley geographic area offers certificate programs in Human Resources. This fact, plus the packaging of courses in this certificate provides students with the unique opportunity to develop core business skills and knowledge while specializing in the human resources discipline, enabling them to be more competitive for human resources assistant positions. In addition, this core/specialization packaging is more in alignment with how SJSU offers their degrees.
