Catalog Description

The Hairstyling Program is a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for a wide range of careers within the beauty industry. The curriculum offers theoretical and practical instruction. Through interactive demonstrations and hands-on applications, students acquire knowledge, language skills for career opportunities in haircutting, hairstyling, sales, and entrepreneurship. Students will understand the importance of professionalism and artistic endeavor in this diverse industry.

Program Goal

The Hairstyling Program allows a student to earn a certificate of achievement or can serve as the foundation to obtaining an AA degree.  It will prepare students for employment as a haircutting specialist, hair extension specialist, wig maker, fashion show stylist, editorial/ advertising stylist, platform artist, celebrity/personality stylist, artistic director for salons or brands, cosmetology educator/ instructor, salon owner or manager, salon development partner, or stylist for film and theater.  

Student's will get hands-on and theoretical training in hairstyling and haircutting as well as health and safety and disinfection and sanitation. Upon completing the 25.5 units and passing the three required courses equivalent to a minimum of 600 hours, students will be prepared to take the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Hairstyling exam to become licensed hairstylists.

Program Requirements Narrative

The students must complete COS 141, COS181, and COS 191 and pass with a grade of 75% or higher to complete the program.  COS 141 is the prerequisite course to 181 and 191. Each course is 8.5 units and have 120 lecture hours and 120 lab hours totaling 240 hours per class possible, and a maximum of 720 total program hours.
