Students who complete the Cosmetology program will have achieved the following occupational competencies for employment in the field of cosmetology: hair cutting, hair styling, permanent waving, chemical straightening, hair coloring, bleaching, facials, makeup, hair removal, manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nail applications.
To earn this certificate, students must meet the following requirements:
- Complete all Department Requirements for the Certificate of Achievement (24 units in the major) with a C or better in all courses required for the certificate.
- Candidates for a Certificate of Achievement are required to complete at least 20% of the department requirements through SBCC.
The Certificate of Achievement in Cosmetology prepares students to enter into the following potential careers: Hair stylist, makeup artist, salon/business owner, salon manager, retail sales, educator, manicurist, product developer, platform artist, advisor, CTE representative, State Board representative, State Board examiner, State Board inspector.
Application Procedures:
Step 1: Obtain a Cosmetology Academy Information & Application packet at www.sbcc.edu/cosmetology or from the SBCC Cosmetology Academy (525 Anacapa Street Santa Barbara), or the Counseling Center (SS-120) on the SBCC campus. New classes begin throughout the academic year; starting dates are listed in the packet and on the SBCC Cosmetology Website.
Step 2: Apply for Admission to SBCC in the Admissions Office, Student Services Building. (This is applying to SBCC-not registering for classes; no money is necessary). Obtain an assessment test date when you submit your application to the college.
Step 3: Mail or deliver to the Academy a completed Cosmetology Application Form.
Step 4: After notification of eligibility, attend the Cosmetology Academy Orientation Meeting. Placement will be based on space availability and application delivery or postmark date.
Step 5: Students are advised to meet with an academic counselor to discuss General Education requirements

The Cosmetology Department prepares students to become the creative, well-trained professionals demanded by today’s beauty industry. Programs qualifying graduates to take the California State Board licensing examinations in Cosmetology, Esthetician and Manicure are available. Lecture and “hands-on” training is provided at the SBCC Cosmetology Academy (525 Anacapa Street). The Cosmetology Program develops expertise in the science and techniques of hair, skin, makeup and nail care. Upon successful completion of a minimum 1000 clock hours of applied preparation in lecture and lab experience in Cosmetology (CSMT 121-124), the student will be eligible to take the California State Board examination to become a licensed cosmetologist. To qualify for this exam, the graduate must be 17 or older, have completed the minimum program requirements, and have proof of completing at least the 10th grade and legal California residency. The Certificate of Achievement in Cosmetology was developed in accordance with Santa Barbara City College’s core principles, mission statement and institutional learning outcomes. The program is fully supported by the SBCC Academic Senate, Curriculum Advisory Committee as well as the SBCC administration and Board of Trustees.
