This certificate is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the insurance industry. These positions include appraiser, agent, customer service, administrative assistant, sales representative, and underwriting. Coursework required for the certificate is intended to help prepare students for insurance industry certifications as well.

The goal of the Insurance Certificate of Achievement is to provide students with the specialized knowledge and foundational business skills required to secure entry-level employment in the robust insurance sector. The program is specifically designed to prepare students for key roles such as appraiser, agent, customer service representative, administrative assistant, sales representative, and underwriting assistant, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for students to pursue official insurance industry certifications.

To earn the Insurance Certificate of Achievement, students must successfully complete 15 units of required core courses and 3 units of restricted electives, for a total of 18 units, with a grade of C (or P) or better. The course sequence is designed to establish a foundational understanding of general business and legal principles alongside basic property and liability concepts, before advancing the student into specialized personal and commercial insurance training. Most full-time students can earn this certificate within three semesters of initial enrollment.

This program establishes a highly focused Career Education pathway within the Business Administration department. It strategically leverages existing foundational business courses (BUS 001, BUS 005) while introducing specialized insurance curriculum. It serves as an excellent standalone, rapid-entry workforce credential, but can also act as a stackable certificate for students pursuing an Associate Degree in Business at Pierce College.

While general Business and Finance degrees are widely available across the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and LARC service areas, highly specialized Insurance certificates are less common. Los Angeles Pierce College is uniquely positioned to offer this program to serve the West San Fernando Valley, providing local residents with accessible training for the numerous insurance brokerages, corporate agencies, and real estate offices located along the 101 corridor.
