The Bakersfield College Media Arts Program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in media arts. Visual communicators increasingly need media arts skills, and this program will provide entry-level competencies for a number of career paths, such as: videographer, photographer, motion graphics designer, animator, video editor, film editor, and filmmaker. This program is housed in the ArtDepartment. We are in the Arts Communications and Humanities Pathway.
To Achieve theCertificate of Achievement: Upon completion of the required courses with at least a ‘C’ or ‘P’grade in each course, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
The Media Arts Program projects 60 – 80 new students to enroll in this program annually with 20 – 40 completing the program.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
1. Upon completion of this course students will produce a portfolio of original digital content, using industry standard software and hardware. Assessment: Projects.
2. Upon completion of this course students will demonstrate an understanding of the visual principles and elements of as they pertain to media arts. Assessment: Projects, tests, exams.
3. Upon completion of this course students will demonstrate the ability to think critically about their own work and the work of others. Assessment: Critiques, projects, tests, quizzes.

Course Report
Courses begin with the basic of video composition and editing instruction that will help students create more advanced work as they continue through the program. The program starts with fundamental concepts taught in Video Production 1 and Animation 1 that are necessary for all of Media Arts. Simultaneously students learn industry-standard editing software while exploring principles and elements of script writing, storyboarding, cinematography, lighting, directing, animation, video editing as used in the film production industries. The program cumulates with the completion of the Animation 2 or an internship allowing students to explore related courses and professional practices within their field of choice.
