Degree/Certificate Description:

 

The Finance Certificate ofAchievement is designed for students who desire to complete a course of study in financial services to gain skills and knowledge and to obtain entry-level finance positions in small and medium-sized businesses. It will provide students with basic accounting skills combined with training in financial planning and will serve as an excellent foundation for those choosing to take the National Association of Securities Dealers series 6 or 7 examinations. It consists of 16 units and can be completed in 2 semesters if a student is attending full time.

We expect that 10 students will complete each year.

Program Goal

Purpose and Goals of Degree/Certificate:

1.      Provide students with the academic preparation needed for a career as a financial planner or an entry-level position in the finance field.

2.      Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions related to spending, saving, borrowing and investing by applying quantitative reasoning concepts.

3.      Providestudents currently working in various finance positions the additional and necessary skills to advance to new positions.

4.      Provide students with an opportunity to obtain a certificate acknowledging their completion of the courses and a tool for obtaining gainful employment as a financial planner.

 

Specific Objectives of Degree/Certificate:

 

The objective of the Finance Certificate is to provide skills through traditional teaching methods and contextual learning techniques with an emphasis on practical "hands-on" education that will give the students an added"edge" in the job. It will provide students with basic accounting skills combined with training in financial planning and will serve as an excellent foundation for those choosing to take the National Association ofSecurities Dealers series 6 or 7 examinations.

1.      Developing the student a broad-based skill set or competencies that will lead to success working as a financial planner.

2.      Utilize a sequence of courses with industry advised curriculum input that will lead to improvement of entry-level skills and abilities of future employees.

3.      Organize finance curriculum into a recognized credit program that is acknowledged by onthe student transcripts.

4.      Identify career ladder opportunities in the Finance Industry.

The proposed Rio Hondo College Certificate of Achievement (COA) for Finance provides students with basic finance skills and knowledge necessary to obtain entry-level finance support positions in small and medium-sized businesses.

This confirms to the community college’s goal of helping students achieve their educational goals by providing a comprehensive educational program to students including basic skills, vocational education, and economic development opportunities.

It will also increase the number of students who will complete a degree and improve success and retention rates since this COA Finance is a milestone achievement for those students working towards an Accounting Certificate of achievement or an Associate Degree in Accounting.
