The curriculum is designed for returning CIS, business, marketing, and data analytics professionals with industry experience or students who have completed CIS courses. A CIS certificate in Big Data Analytics will provide students with the knowledge and skills to obtain jobs in the areas of data science, data analysis, big data and data mining. Students will learn how to make business decisions based upon the analysis of large amounts of data. Students will learn about processing, integrating, modeling, mining, and analytics related to big data. Students will use frameworks, tools, services, and programming languages to analyze data.

Program Goal
Big Data analytics is a fast-growing technology that enables companies to make business decisions based upon the analysis of large amounts of internal and external data. It is a high job-growth field. This course will be a part of a three-course Big Data Analytics Certificate. The CIS department already has the instructors, facilities, and equipment to offer this course. Students completing this certificate will conduct predictive data analysis and data mining with large amounts of diverse data to make effective business decisions. According to the labor market research report produced by the Center of Excellence, there is an apparent need for the data analytics certificate. In 2017, there were 3,845 job postings related to data analytics in Los Angeles County. Between 2014 and 2017, programs related to data analytics conferred an annual average of 197 community college awards (associate degrees and certificates). More than 65% of students conferring awards in programs related to data analytics (in the 2015-2016 academic year) have achieved employment within six months of graduating. There is no community college in Los Angeles and Orange counties that offers a similar certificate. Students will conduct predictive data analysis and data mining required for “Computer and Information Research Scientists” occupation. Students will design, model, or implement corporate data warehousing activities required for “Data Warehousing Specialists” occupation. Students will produce financial and market intelligence by querying data repositories and generating periodic reports. Devise methods for identifying data patterns and trends in available information sources which is required for “Business Intelligence Analysts” occupation. Students will analyze research, data, or technology to understand user intent and measure outcomes for ongoing optimization which is required by the “Search Marketing Strategists” occupation. Students will apply knowledge of health care and database management to analyze clinical data, and to identify and report trend which is required for “Clinical Data Managers” occupation.
