The Trauma-Informed Early Childhood Educator Certificate of Achievement is designed for students that are new or experienced in the field of child development. The certificate coursework will provide students with a foundational knowledge of childhood trauma and trauma informed education. Students will learn about the impact of trauma on children and how it affects their development, family systems, and teachers who work with these children. The certificate will also help teachers develop supportive practices to help children and their families heal from trauma as well as the teachers who interact with them.
Annual completers will be between 36-50 students. This program can be stacked into the current associates, or taken as an incumbent for skilling up.

- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The program will:
Enable our Grossmont College students to leave our institution with an edge over other California community college students as they will have a foundational level of knowledge in Trauma Informed Education & Teaching.
Allow students to use the Trauma Informed coursework as a specialization for the Master Teacher level Child Development Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing office.

The Trauma-Informed Early Childhood Educator Certificate of Achievement is tailored for both new and experienced individuals in child development. This program equips students with essential knowledge about childhood trauma and its educational implications. It delves into the effects of trauma on children's development, family dynamics, and the educators involved. The curriculum is designed to enable teachers to develop effective strategies for supporting children and families affected by trauma, as well as to address their own needs as caregivers.
Upon completion, students will gain a competitive edge, particularly within California's community college landscape, due to their specialized knowledge in Trauma-Informed Education & Teaching. This foundation not only enhances their prospects for further education but also boosts their employability. Additionally, the certificate allows students to specialize in Trauma-Informed coursework, aligning with the Master Teacher level Child Development Permit requirements set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing office.
The certificate program comprises 18 units, focusing on various aspects of child development and trauma-informed practices. Key courses include Child, Growth, and Development (CD 125), Child, Family and Community (CD 131), Working with Children with Special Needs (CD 141), Responsive Planning for Infant/Toddler Care (CD 143), Trauma and Its Effects on Children, Families, and Teachers (CD 147), and Trauma-Informed Practices for Early Childhood Education (CD 148). Each course is structured to provide comprehensive insights and practical approaches to dealing with trauma in early childhood education settings.

Palomar supports this new program and believes the Early Childhood Education is one area where LMI data may not be fully representative of community need and opportunities for employment. In addition, this certificate offers specific training in working with children with trauma, which may enhance students' employability with an Associate's Degree.

MiraCosta College supports given the correct LMI provided by the COE. It appears the high wage jobs require bachelors degrees and child development LMI continues to be disappointing. As such I would caution any new programs in child development, but, to Tina's point modifications should be encouraged towards including whatever a student may complete towards earning higher wages.

The LMI included in this submission is for Imperial County. Please resubmit with the proper LMI for San Diego County. See links at the end of this comment. The COE recommends proceeding with caution when developing a new program. According to the LMI, there is no supply gap. Additionally, to obtain employment in an occupation that pays the living wage, a student would need at least a bachelor’s degree. The Career Education Guide shows that the only high-wage, high-demand occupations in Education and Human Development were those that required at least a bachelor’s degree. However, despite these challenges (low wages, high education) in the industry, there is a need for childcare providers in San Diego County. Additionally, there is a need for overall trauma-informed care, per the Perkins V Comprehensive Needs Assessment, which this program offers. Therefore, the COE defers to the region for this submission, but endorses program modification for these types of programs.
