Catalog Description

The Advanced Diagnostic Specialist Certificate of Achievement from Solano Community College certifies that students are prepared and have demonstrated foundational competency in diagnosing, testing, and repairing modern automotive electrical and electronic systems. Aligned with National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence entry-level (L1) standards, this program emphasizes applied electrical theory, circuit analysis, use of diagnostic equipment, and interpretation of service information. Students develop the skills necessary to evaluate sensors, actuators, starting and charging systems, and basic vehicle network communication while adhering to industry safety and professional practices. Successful completers are prepared for entry-level positions and for progression toward professional ASE certification.

This is a preparatory certificate that will get you ready for the L1 exam. To become ASE certified, you must pass an ASE test and have relevant hands-on work experience. You may register and take tests (except for the X1 test) before you have the necessary experience. If you do so, you will receive a score report, but you will not earn certification or receive certificates until you fulfill the experience requirement.

The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained upon completion of the 24.5 unit major. All courses within the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or a P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Advanced Diagnostic Specialist Certificate of Achievement supports the mission of the college by providing advanced career technical education that prepares students for employment and career advancement within the automotive service and repair industry. The program aligns with Education Code Section 66010.4 by offering workforce-focused instruction that responds to industry demand for highly skilled diagnostic technicians capable of servicing increasingly complex vehicle systems.
The purpose of the program is to provide students with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in automotive diagnostics, drivability analysis, electrical and electronic systems troubleshooting, vehicle communication networks, and emerging transportation technologies. The certificate is designed for students seeking to expand beyond foundational automotive repair skills and develop specialized competencies required for advanced diagnostic positions in dealership, independent repair, and fleet maintenance environments.
The Advanced Diagnostic Specialist Certificate serves as a specialized career pathway within the Automotive Technology program. Building upon foundational automotive coursework, the program develops the analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills required to diagnose complex vehicle concerns involving integrated mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computer-controlled systems. Coursework emphasizes systematic diagnostic procedures, advanced testing equipment, manufacturer service information, and industry-standard troubleshooting methodologies.
The curriculum revision reflects recommendations identified through the college's program review process and consultation with the Automotive Technology Advisory Committee. Industry representatives have consistently identified a growing need for technicians with advanced diagnostic capabilities due to increased vehicle system integration, hybrid and electric vehicle technologies, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and sophisticated onboard communication networks. Advisory committee feedback confirmed the importance of preparing technicians who can efficiently identify root-cause failures and accurately repair modern vehicle systems.
The program addresses documented workforce needs within the region by preparing students for high-demand positions requiring advanced technical expertise. As automotive technology continues to evolve, employers increasingly seek technicians who possess strong diagnostic and analytical skills in addition to traditional repair competencies. The certificate provides students with the specialized training necessary to meet these workforce expectations and support regional economic development.
The program complements existing automotive technology offerings within the college and region by providing an advanced specialization that builds upon foundational automotive training. Rather than duplicating existing programs, the certificate creates a pathway for students seeking advanced technical skills and career advancement opportunities. The program supports stackable credentialing by allowing students to progress from entry-level and intermediate automotive certificates into advanced diagnostic training.
The Automotive Technology program currently maintains the instructional facilities, diagnostic equipment, scan tools, oscilloscopes, service information systems, and laboratory resources necessary to support implementation of the certificate. Existing facilities are sufficient to deliver the revised curriculum. Future equipment upgrades associated with evolving vehicle technologies will be incorporated through normal program planning processes, grant funding opportunities, industry partnerships, and institutional equipment replacement schedules.
The program remains open to all eligible students and complies with California Community College open enrollment requirements as established in Title 5 regulations. Any industry partnerships, internship opportunities, or employer collaborations associated with the program supplement instructional activities and do not limit student access to enrollment.
Through ongoing program review, advisory committee engagement, and curriculum improvement, the Advanced Diagnostic Specialist Certificate of Achievement will continue to provide students with the advanced diagnostic skills, technical expertise, and professional competencies required for success in the modern automotive service industry.

Goal of Program

CTE

Include any other information you would like to share.

This program will serve as advanced-level training for working professionals. It will also work to elevate high-performing students who can enter the workforce with advanced certification. In a competitive workforce, advanced-level certification will offer the leading edge over other candidates. The Automotive Service Excellence pathway progresses from entry-level to mastery-level and, finally, to the Advanced Specialist level. Through the creation of this course we are mirroring industry standards and aligning with current market demand. Students gain everything by having a program that supports their career development and educational goals.

Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.

This is meant to prepare students for the L1 ASE. This pathway also offers updated training for established technicians in the field. Most of the Automotive programs offered by Colleges are meant to serve as an entry path, while these courses are advanced courses that prepare students for the Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) exam. Note: In the automotive field, a specialist is ranked higher than a Master-certified technician.
