Catalog Description

The Pre-radiography Associate in Science program prepares the student to develop the foundational knowledge of radiography and transfer to Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Associate in Science degree in Radiography and the California State University Northridge baccalaureate degree.

The program is a partnership with the SBCC radiography program to provide career and technical education access to the students of the northern Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

The program includes courses that meet the general education (GE) requirements for the SBCC associate degree and the lower division GE requirements of the CSU Northridge baccalaureate program.

Upon program completion, the graduate meets the requirements for the SBCC associate degree in radiography program.

The Pre-radiography Associate Degree in Science will eventually lead to career opportunities as a radiographic technologist in hospitals, imaging centers, and clinics. With further education and training in specific radiographical technologies, there are career options in ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scans, and in the areas of quality control, research, and management.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Fall 2025 enrollment: RT 100 (33 students) and RT 101 (31 students).

Both courses are indicators of student interest in the radiographic technologist career. There are 31-33 students from the northern Santa Barbara (SB) county and San Luis Obispo (SLO) county who can transfer to the Santa Barbara City College Radiography program. The number may not necessarily increase the completers of the program but it increases the proportion of completers who live in northern SB County and SLO county.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Pre-radiography Associate Degree program prepares northern Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties students to access career and technical education in radiography and related professions. This is a collaborative partnership with the Santa Barbara City College Radiography program. Upon completion, the student can apply and complete the requirements for the associate degree in radiography (SBCC) and be eligible for licensure as a radiographic technologist.

The Pre-radiography program is a collaboration with the SBCC AS in Radiography department. It is designed to provide the career and technical education access to the northern Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. It meets the emerging and ongoing need for radiology technologists and technicians of the local health services partners. It uses locally available clinical sites to educate and train radiology technologists and technicians.

It aligns with the AHC curriculum by requiring CSU GE (or Cal-GETC) courses and four core area of emphasis courses total of 48 units. It prepares the student to transfer to the SBCC associate degree in radiography and CSU Northridge baccalaureate program.

The local health services organizations are in dire need of this workforce and are looking forward to more clinical placements for the students in northern SB and SLO counties and are anticipating hiring the program completers. It serves the local student population by offering flexible instructional modalities to accommodate student needs and provide quality education.

There are no similar programs offered in the college. There is an overlap and cross-listing with MA/MB 305 Body Systems and Disease in the same department. The overlap potentially increases enrollment in the MA/MB 305. This also provides options for medical assisting and medical billing completers to consider careers in radiography.

This is a new program provides additional options to CSUGE and/or Cal-GETC requirements completers (auto-awardees). It also includes BIOL 124 Anatomy and BIOL 125 Physiology that may impact the course offerings.

There are no similar pre-radiography programs in the service area. The associate degree in pre-radiography will meet SBCC Radiography application requirements.
