The certificate of achievement in commercial photography is intended to prepare students for employment in several specialization areas within the field of professional photography that include advertising, product, food, portraiture, and events. In addition to course material focused on core technical skills aligned to industry standards, students will learn business practices, and visual communication. The curriculum (18 units) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive photographic foundation to develop a strong portfolio.
LA Mission College has a strong related Multimedia program in both Video Production and Graphic & Web Design. Many of these students will want to stack this certificate with those A.A. degrees. We also expect to attract new students through outreach and work assist employment opportunities.
We expect 10-15 certificates per year in the 1st three years.
Subsequent years: 20+ completions per year.
Projections are based on recent graduate rates for the Multimedia program.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The Commercial Photography Certificate of Achievement will prepare students for entry-level positions in the field of commercial photography. Students will acquire foundational skills in a practical, hands-on environment using the latest industry standard photography equipment and software.
Students will explore composition, lighting, color theory, digital capture methods, image manipulation, studio management, workflow, organizational skills and business practices.
PLOs:
1. Demonstrate technical skills in photography.
2. Evaluate aesthetic principles to illustrate strong visual communication.
3. Develop a portfolio and utilize business strategies for job preparation.

Course Report
All courses required for this certificate are already approved within the LACCD. Two courses are already offered at Los Angeles Mission College.
This certificate is in collaboration with the LAMC Multimedia program and supports the Associates degree CAP pathway Video Production and Graphic and Web Design as two courses overlap with these degrees and create an opportunity for students to stack the commercial photography with an AA.
