Catalog Description

Los Angeles City Structural Welding License Program is designed to take a welding trainee through the process of getting the requisite practicals for the City of Los Angeles’ AWS D 1.1 Structural Welding License and preparation for the Los Angeles City proctored respective written test.  Both the practicals and the written test have to be completed and logged with the City of Los Angeles before a D 1.1 Welding License is issued.  Upon successful completion of the Los Angeles City Structural Welding License Certificate of Achievement, completers will be fully prepared for the recognized professional certification – LAC D 1.1 Welding License – as the industry does not recognize welding Certificates of Achievement. This is considered a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program which provides students with the skills required to safely and effectively be employed as a Los Angeles City Structural Welder in public and private settings.

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Our current certificates completions are between 4-11 per year. However, with the addition of this new certificate we expect that number to go up.

Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The attached documents have labor market data for jobs/careers in the Welding industry. The data shows that jobs in the field are growing and the median compensation is higher than the entry level national average. Students will be able to, upon successful completion of the Los Angeles City Structural Welding Certificate of Achievement, receive the requisite industry credential and will be prepared for employment as a Los Angeles City Structural Welder in public and private settings.

This program is made to address the impasse of the Welding industry and Welding instruction at the California Community College level. The Welding industry fails to consider a Certificate of Achievement as a valid measure of employability. This program is designed to take welding trainees through the instruction and process of applying for and receiving the prestigious industry credential – LAC D 1.1 Welding License. This program will satisfy both requirements as the students will get a valid welding license and at the same time the chancellor will get the Certificate of Achievement.

New Program

Place of program in college's curriculum/similar program.
The Los Angeles City Structural Welding License Program is a new program and the third certificate of achievement in the Welding department. Ultimately, the Los Angeles City Structural Welding License Program should serve as one of two welding certificates, one for structural and one for fabrication. The current welding certificates, Construction Welding Gas Tungsten and Gas Metal Welding, have additional classes that are not necessary for recognition and receipt of the Los Angeles City D 1.1 Welding License.
List similar programs at other colleges in the Los Angeles and Orange County Region.
The listed community colleges below are those with similar programs. Despite the number of colleges offering welding technology, the LMI data shows that demand exceeds the current supply of awards conferred annually by education institutions in the region. Although they have the same top code, the colleges below do not offer the welding certificate focused on the Los Angeles City D 1.1 Welding License. The schools’ primary focus is general welding technology (construction and/or gas) and we are specifically aligning our program with the City of Los Angeles in preparation for receiving the prestigious industry credential – LAC D 1.1 Welding License.
