Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The breadth of study required to learn about the craft of producing is far ranging. Producers are present in every single genre of television and film and play major roles in each type of production. The producer has a great amount of power at every stage of the production process. At the pre-production stage, they might secure rights to a valuable literary property, conduct fundraising or negotiate key cast or crew. During principal photography, they may shepherd the production process or maintain relations with the studio and/or distributor. Throughout post-production, they might have creative input in the film’s final outcome or identify distribution outlets. Even though a producer today can have a wide range of roles within the field, there are roles that only fit into different types of "producers". Within the industry, there are many different types of producers who are only designated to specific roles such as controlling the staff and handling the finances. For example, to oversee and manage all aspects of video production the role may be filled by the line producer, but an executive producer would be selected to oversee all other producers’ work.

LACC maintains a strong relationship within the shakers and movers within Hollywood. Several of the campus alum, have made their mark as Producers and in other capacities. Each year we conduct an advisory meeting with leading industry professionals gain their input on our curriculum and instructional practices, as well as to discern qualities they seek in hiring. Distinguished alumni include Albert Hughes, Mimi Leder, Tamra Davis, Karen Moncrieff, Maggie Greenwald, Kevin Tent and Tarsem Singh, including five Academy Award wins, such as cinematographer Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood).

Los Angeles City College offers low-cost, comprehensive, hands-on training to a diverse population, who might not be in a position to afford a 4-year commitment to an LA-area film college or university. Students have the option to complete basic college courses with certificates, receive an Associate Arts Degree in Cinema or Television Production (AA), and transfer to four-year institutions.

LACC is uniquely positioned to provide excellent entertainment industry training, particularly considering the geographical proximity of the campus to the Hollywood community.

The LACC Cinema/TV Department was awarded an unprecedented $2 million donation from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The support of the HFPA continues with annual LACC student-awarded fellowships, Golden Globe™ internships, and other interactions special events.
