Catalog Description
The Architecture Department offers vocational and paraprofessional programs in architectural technology as well as preparation for transfer to four- and five-year architecture programs. The curriculum provides necessary skills for employment in the design and construction fields. Students may prepare for positions as CAD drafting technicians, 3-D project renderers, and other similarly related occupations in public and private sector architecture and construction/building industry related offices. Supplemental courses offer students a broad architectural and general education background and enable them to continue their education in architecture at the university level.

  • Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
Program Goal
This certificate is primarily designed to provide the student with the necessary entry-level skills needed for entry into work or to continue their studies into a 4 year University program, where they will work towards gaining a professional degree eventually leading to licensure further down the line. The courses within the program will provide a strong foundation for students to successfully execute their upper division work toward the major in Architecture or a related field. The global business of building/environmental design is continually growing and demand is stable if not growing, particularly in the Bay Area. Students who pursue their Bachelor’s and higher often have greater chances of securing a position in a professional office, especially after gaining some real-world experience, but entry level CAD drafting positions do arise, more often in a related field. Such positions still provide very valuable and useful job/detailing skills which can later be applied as they progress in their educational goals. Architects need to know materials and how things get detailed and go together, and that is true at every level and every aspect of a project, from the smallest of things integrated in a building to the largest and most complex aspects of a building. Students will work with a variety of tools starting with manual drawing tools to develop their visualization/design skills and then advance to various CAD software tools which help them manipulate and refine more complex design ideas and processes. The advancement of digital design and fabrication within the realm of Architectural practice is one such area where this integrative workflow process becomes critical and thus one of the reasons we are developing and integrating this practice more and more into our program. Students will benefit greatly from taking all of the courses in our program because that will provide them with the broadest exposure to all of the skills that are relevant to the creative design/fabrication/build aspect of architecture.

Goal of Program

CTE

Include any other information you would like to share.
The Architecture CA/AS provides students in the Bay area with the necessary skills needed to pursue an entry level position or enter a higher level degree at a 4 and 5 yr. university program, both in and out of state. At the same time it also addresses employment needs in the region by providing opportunities for individuals seeking to add or improve their skills, particularly in the realm of BIM (Building Information Modeling) and CAD computer based software programs. Many students come to Laney specifically for those types of job related skill upgrades and also one of the reasons we do not have as many full program completers as we would like – they come and take only those courses that they feel will help them the most in their current situation or that will help ensure their entry into a 4 or 5 yr. university program.

This submission is for both an A.S. Degree & Certificate of Achievement. There is a glitch in the portal at the moment that is not recognizing the A.S. Degree indication. BACCC is working with the site developers to get that fixed.
