Catalog Description

The Public Safety Management Bachelors of Science degree is designed to educate students and develop essential skills to manage and lead public safety organizations. Students will apply theory to practical, real-life scenarios as they develop critical thinking skills necessary for a career in public safety in local, state, or federal governments. The program focuses on discipline-specific workforce skills related to public safety administration and personnel management, policy and law, communications and the community, operational planning, cultural competence and research methods. The coursework emphasizes the practical and theoretical skills of supervision, management, administration, and leadership, focusing on the public safety organizations of criminal justice, fire, and other public sector safety career in the rural and regional areas.

Program Learning Outcomes 

  1. Identify the roles and analyze the interactions of various emergency management and public safety providers within the context of the communities they serve, with specific attention to the unique needs and challenges of rural settings. 

  1. Evaluate and apply local, state, and federal laws, as well as departmental policies and procedures, to ensure ethical compliance, equitable enforcement, and effective leadership in public safety operations.  

  1. Identify and evaluate effective leadership, management, and communication strategies to meet the needs of stakeholders in rural environments. 

  1. Develop and implement community engagement strategies that enhance trust, improve communication, and strengthen collaborative partnerships between public safety agencies and diverse populations. 

  1. Apply advanced critical thinking skills and evidence-based practices to analyze complex issues in policing, develop innovative solutions, and respond effectively to public safety challenges. 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to lead and manage public safety teams by applying principles of ethical leadership, organizational behavior, and effective decision-making to foster accountability, professionalism, and operational efficiency.
