Catalog Description

The Illustration Level 2: Entertainment Arts certificate provides students with the skillset to create concepts and illustrations for the entertainment industry including video games, film, and television. Students must complete the Illustration Level 1 certificate first requiring a total of 18 units and courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher. Focusing on visual communication and world building, students will generate a professional portfolio showcasing strong character design, perspective, props, and keyframes showcasing strong draftsmanship techniques for employment in the entertainment industry.

The goal of this certificate is to prepare students with the skillset necessary to work in the entertainment arts industry. Students who successfully complete the program will be able to:

Generate new story concepts and visuals

Communicate story beats with clear visual narration

Demonstrate the synthesis of story, style, character, location, emotion, and symbology in compositional studies

Clearly communicate character and emotion visually

Utilize quick study drawing skills through visual notes and personal studies as a basis for planning larger extended works of art.

Create original concepts that interpret a new visual world.

The Illustration program recently joined the CEA department and became a part of the Graphic Design and Illustration program (GD&I). The program currently offers 4 courses including Illustration, Illustration 2, Visual Development, and Dynamic Sketching. The program collaborates with several disciplines within CEA as well. It shares Visual Development with Animation as it is a cross-listed class.
