Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate of Achievement
New Program
Emergency Medical Services (125000)
08/24/25
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate of Achievement is designed for students interested in careers within the medical field, such as working in an ambulance, serving as an Emergency Room (ER) technician, preparing for a Physician Assistant (PA) program, or completing fire academy.
This certificate provides essential training that meets the National Registry requirements for EMT-B. It offers a solid emergency medical care foundation through scenario-based hands-on training and critical thinking exercises. The coursework emphasizes the development of teamwork, communication, leadership, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, ensuring that students will be well-prepared for the challenges of the emergency medicine industry.
Cabrillo College offers one of the few academy-based EMT programs at the community college level in California. The program simulates a real-world team environment, incorporating a platoon and squad model that fosters delegation, teamwork, communication, and leadership. Physical training is also included, focusing on body mechanics and physical agility to prepare students for future academies.
Upon completion, students will be prepared to take the National Registry Exam, which is required for state certification as a certified EMT in California.
The Emergency Medical Technician program expects to enroll 40-45 per cohort each year. The completion rates are approximately 36-41 per cohort. This program is heavily impacted and typically has a waitlist of 18-25 students per cohort. There is tremendous demand for this certificate and the program has incredible potential for growth.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The proposed Emergency Medical Technician Certificate of Achievement is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled fire service and medical professionals and provide a clear pathway to becoming an Emergency Medical Technician. The certificate aims to prepare students for careers in fire service, emergency response, and fire safety management, aligning with our college’s educational master plan. It addresses the need for trained professionals capable of responding to emergencies with expertise, critical thinking, and effective decision-making skills.
The sustainability of this certificate is supported by the college's commitment to allocating necessary resources, including experienced faculty and access to relevant training equipment. Ongoing partnerships with local fire departments and emergency services organizations further contribute to the program's success through resource sharing, guest lectures, and practical training opportunities. The certificate is a pathway within the Fire Technology - Associate in Science degree.
The alignment of the certificate with labor market data (TOP Code 1250.00) demonstrates an increasing demand for fire service professionals, mostly driven by workforce retirements and an expanding scope of responsibilities in fire safety and emergency response. The certificate directly addresses this demand by equipping students with the skills and knowledge required by employers. This alignment has been confirmed by our advisory committee, which includes representatives from local fire departments, emergency services, and related industries. Discussions with the advisory committee have emphasized the importance of a comprehensive education in fire technology and medical services that combines technical skills with critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. The advisory committee strongly supports the creation of this certificate, highlighting its potential to meet critical workforce needs and contribute to community safety and well-being.
The Emergency Medical Technician Certificate of Achievement is specifically designed to focus on pre-hospital emergency medical care, serving as a required course for individuals planning careers in the fire and emergency medical services industries. Additionally, this certificate provides a solid foundation for those entering any first responder field, whether in pre-hospital or hospital settings. Students completing this certificate will gain both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to succeed in emergency response, ensuring preparedness for immediate employment and future career growth.

The Emergency Medical Technician Certificate of Achievement is housed in the Fire Technology department. The curriculum and courses that are part of this certificate are existing and active courses in the Cabrillo curriculum library that address the needs identified by our labor market analysis and advisory committee input. Courses packaged in this certificate are designed to be hands-on and practical, ensuring that students learn the theoretical aspects of fire science and gain the practical skills necessary for the workplace.
There are similar programs in the service area, including Monterey Peninsula College. Both programs work together collaboratively and both programs have been offered for several decades. Due to the high demand for fire service personnel and jobs in the fire service, it is seen as mutually beneficial to offer programs at both colleges.
