SOUND FOR FILM
New Program
Film Production (061220)
08/29/22
Students earning the Sound for Film certificate of achievement will have received the hands-on training, technical competence, historical context, and principles needed to enter the entertainment work force and launch a career in audio post-production. The classes offered prepare students for a number of industry careers including audio and video technicians, sound engineering technicians, film and video editors, dialogue editor, ADR recorder/mixer, foley recorder/mixer, re-recording mixer, and sound designer.
The program’s specific focus on music and sound is unique in the area, and it empowers students to learn specialized skills that enable them to achieve the following outcomes:
- Demonstrate the techniques of making, recording, and mixing sound for film.
- Build collaborative skills with video editors and directors.
- Communicate effectively with musicians, who will compose and/or perform music for the sound design.
- Demonstrate a working understanding of the complex final stages of mixing for domestic and international markets.
We anticipate 10 projected students/annual completers each year, based on enrollment data.

Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
In the pursuit of the Sound for Film certificate of achievement, students will receive hands-on training, technical competence, historical context, and principles needed to enter the entertainment work force in an audio post-production career. The classes and mentorship offered prepare them for a number of industry careers including dialogue editor, ADR recorder/mixer, foley recorder/mixer, re-recording mixer, and sound designer. This program is appropriate for inclusion in Community College because it requires 21 units of lower-division courses. While it may be the basis for transfer to a four-year university, this program may also be undertaken as part of a terminal degree and teaches skills that are marketable for students who wish to move directly into a career position.
Potential careers students may pursue after completion:
- Audio & Video Technicians
- Sound Engineering Technicians
- Film and Video Editors
- Dialogue Editor
- ADR Recorder / Mixer
- Foley Recorder / Mixer
- Re-Recording Mixer
- Sound Designer

Course Report
LACC’s proximity to Hollywood, along with the strong alliances the Cinema/TV and Music Departments have forged in virtually all areas of the industry, gives our students unique access to careers that are simply not available in many other areas. This program and certificate help to build marketable skills in the area of audio post-production, and the classes offered will be taught by faculty with both industry and academic experience. The skills learned in this course of study will prepare students for success and employment in post-production careers, or may be part of an Associate’s Degree for Transfer (AD-T). This program aligns with the college goal of empowering students from our diverse community to achieve their educational and career goals by providing the specialized skills and knowledge required for a career in post-production.
This certificate would be the first of its kind in the LACCD. Other degrees in post-production do not have the focus on sound and music as this proposed program. Furthermore, there are no comparable programs available at two of our closest CC neighbors, Pasadena City College and Glendale Community College. Santa Monica College offers a degree in Entertainment Technology with a possible focus on post-production. This program has some overlap with the proposed program, but it lacks the collaboration of SMC’s Music Department. One of this program’s greatest strengths is the collaboration between the Cinema/TV Department and the Music Department. Faculty from both disciplines have carefully curated a course of study from both areas that will benefit students interested in an interdisciplinary specialty.
