Welding Technology (095650)
05/02/22
The Welding Technology Certificate of Achievement is aligned with the American Welding Society and primarily focuses on Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, Flux Core Arc Welding, Oxy-Fuel Welding, and various fabrication techniques. The courses within the welding program expose students to both laboratory and lecture learning opportunities.
Upon satisfactory completion of this award, the student should be prepared to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of welding safety.
- Demonstrate various welding procedures to the standards set by the American Welding Society.
The Welding Technology Program continues to expand and increase enrollment. This fall, the program has added a fabrication course and there has been significant interest. Currently there is a combined enrollment of approximately 60 students. The projected number of students who take introductory classes and follow through to receive a Certificate of Achievement is approximately 25%; approximately 15 students complete the Welding Program each year. Current LMI data (2019-2020) shows 290 projected job openings for the job classification “Welders, cutters, solderers, andbrazers."
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 8 to fewer than 16 semester (or 12 to fewer than 24 quarter) units (B)
NOTE: This award has been in existence and CCCCO-approved since 2001. As the CCCCO is now requiring Regional Consortia approval for all vocational awards, we are submitting this award for approval even though it already exists in COCI with a control number. The most current version of the award (as laid out in this submission) becomes effective 5/02/2022.
The goal of the Columbia College Welding Program is to prepare students to successfully enter the welding industry or develop skills that allow the student to reach their goals. The program strives to stay current with new technology and maintain curriculum that is up to date with industry standards. Course work and curriculum are driven by the welding industry. Our goals every semester include American Welding Society (A.W.S)certifications as well as meeting our industry focused Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). This Certificate of Achievement allows students to earn an award linked to welding industry standards.
