Catalog Description

The goal of the Social Work and Human Services Certificate of Achievement is to prepare students for basic entry level positions in social work and other human services agencies. This certificate of achievement is comprised of courses, which are all required as part of the Social Work and Human Services AA-T and/or Social and Behavioral Sciences AA degrees. 

The Certificate of Achievement provides abroad array of entry-level knowledge and skill building needed to effectively work in social services delivery systems. The certificate also prepares students for completion of the degrees listed above.

Upon satisfactory completion of this award, the student should be prepared to:

  • Describe the basic concepts, methods of inquiry, and the theories of social work and human services practice.
  • Explain how the human services field serves as a foundation for skills-building, effective social work practice, and ethical service delivery.
  • Use the human services perspectives to interpret service delivery systems, historical and contemporary helping systems.
Enrollment Completer Projections

This COA can be offered on campus and at Sierra Conservation Center. It would be reasonable to see 20 students per year completing this program.

Goals:

To equip students with generalist knowledge, values, and skills and to prepare students for entry level social work and human services practice with diverse systems.

To prepare students with strategies of advocacy and social change that advance social justice.

To foster the student's professional social work and human services identity through self-awareness and an appreciation for the history and values of helping professions.

To prepare students with critical thinking skills in areas of practice, research, and ethics to help ensure success in social work and human services fields.

 

Objectives:

To assist with students' development of understanding and integration of social work and human services theories and practice.

To develop student's professional social work and human services values and ethics.

For students to apply systems concepts to practice across the micro and macro continuum.

For students to demonstrate constructive critical thinking skills.

 To allow students to demonstrate an understanding of social work and human services concepts and the planned changed process based in systems theory.

For students to develop the ability to communicate effectively and professionally in oral and written formats.

To assist students with their professional development and professional identity.

Students will develop and understanding of working with people of diversity; including age, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation without discrimination.

Assist students with an understanding of working toward social justice and advocacy.

Expose students to the history, current realities, and future implications of social service systems with regard to the local and global continuum.
