Program Goal

The goal of the Certificate in Musical Theater with Theater Focus is to prepare students to succeed in auditions for regional and national shows.

The certificate provides the skills needed to audition in the musical theater industry, building upon existing strengths in theatrical performance to create a triple-threat singer/actor/dancer. The emphasis of the program is hands-on experience in performance. Students receive class and one-on-one voice instruction throughout the four-semester program, with opportunities to perform solos, in small ensembles, in a large choral ensemble, and in the musical theater production.

Upon completion of this program, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate acting, singing, and dancing proficiency suitable for a musical theater audition;
  • Perform standard musical theater repertoire, solo and ensemble, at a collegiate level;
  • Read music notation with a proficiency level suitable to learn new music quickly;
  • Apply musical theater, music, dance and acting terminology and language to critiques of musical theater performances;
  • Develop and demonstrate informed artistic choices in performance;
  • Analyze musical theater literature;
  • Demonstrate collaboration and team building skills;
  • Creatively solve problems

Potential careers exist in the field based upon the success of auditions. Between 2016 and 2018, 35%-43% of performers possessed job training equivalent to an Associate degree or less. Growth in this profession is projected at 7% through the year 2026 in the State of California.

Goal of Program

CTE & Transfer

Include any other information you would like to share.
Though this is a CTE certificate, all of the courses in the certificate are accepted for CSU and UC transfer credit. Many of the courses are requirements of Music, Theater and Dance degrees at transfer schools. However, transfer is not the path of this program.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
Like West Valley College, nearby Foothill College offers an AA in Theatre Arts. The degree at Foothill offers options for concentration, one of which is Musical Theatre Performance. That option provides 1 unit in Dance (Jazz), and 8 units of singing technique and repertoire for musical theater, all based in the Theatre Arts Department. The remaining 35 units of major courses are focused on theatre arts. That comes closest to matching breadth and depth of this proposal in all three areas.
