Bay Area Regional Questions
CTE
Advisory Board recommends development of the Certificate. LMI from LightCast indicates the Bay Area and San Joaquin County is a hot spot for this occupation. COE LMA includes undersupply in bay area and oversupply in east bay area.
Discussion request includes:
Nick Vasallo, Music Instructor, Diablo Valley College
-DVC is concerned this certificate will compete with their certificate offerings, specifically with their San Ramon students. Communication has been conveyed with a meeting scheduled after the winter break for resolution.
Supporting Colleges include:
-Laney College: John Reager, Music Department Chair
Per email: Yes, I support LPC's planned curriculum.
-Chabot College: Young Schwyter, Music Faculty
Per email: While Chabot offers programs in Music Technology and Production with some overlap, including courses in recording, music business and electronic music, each college has its own areas of emphasis and expertise; LPC's curriculum should not negatively affect our program. In fact, I see it as complimentary, an additional pathway in the district; I am fully support of LPC moving forwrd with the program.
-Merritt College: Monica Francesca Ambalal, Ph.D., Instructor of Music
Per email: At this time, we do not have any performance classes. We are focused more in transferable GE music course (history, cultural studies); We support your planned curriculum.
-Sierra College: Lauren Madrid Poluha, PhD; Professor & Department Chair; Sierra College Music
Per email: We have a CTE certificate program that has some overlap with the one you're proposing, but ours equips students with a slightly different skill set. It's called the Media & Public Event Production certificate; it teaches students techniques in media content creation & management, and public event technical support, and includes courses in Music, Theater, and Business. Your proposed program focuses much more on musicianship, composition, and performance than ours does. I don't see any conflicts or interactions between our two programs given the distance between our two campuses, and we hope you can get it launched next year - good luck!
-West Valley College: Robert Sinclair, Music Theory Coordinator
Per email: West Valley Colleges offers recording arts and music production certificates. Our department does not feel your certificate will affect our program adversely. In fact, it will help to promote the study of the career throughout Northern California. The West Valley College Music Department fully supports going forward with your planned curriculum and certificate.
