Program SLOs

  • Apply theoretical and scientific knowledge from the subdisciplines in kinesiology as it relates to the coaching industry.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of sport and exercise safety, injury prevention, and basic injury treatment.
  • Employ skills to work independently in the coaching industry with the ability to lead individuals and teams in athletic practice and competition and identify the business aspects of the coaching industry.
Enrollment Completer Projections

It is projected that approximately 10–30 students will complete the Athletic Coaching Certificate annually. This estimate is based on current enrollment patterns in existing Kinesiology courses that comprise the certificate.

KIN 130, a core course within the program, is offered in two or more sections per academic year, with typical enrollments ranging from 20–30 students per section. Historically, a significant portion of students enrolled in Kinesiology and Exercise Science courses express interest in coaching-related careers. The certificate formalizes this pathway and is expected to convert a portion of currently enrolled students into certificate completers.

Because all required courses are existing offerings with consistent enrollment, the program can be implemented without adding new sections. Enrollment projections are therefore considered realistic and sustainable based on demonstrated student demand.

Reason for program recommendation request

New Program

Place of program in college's curriculum/similar program

The Athletic Coaching Certificate complements and strengthens the existing Kinesiology and Exercise Science program inventory. As stated the certificate utilizes established courses that are already part of the department’s offerings and does not duplicate any current degree or certificate program.

While the department currently offers programs focused on fitness, exercise science, and athletic training, there is no existing certificate specifically designed to prepare students for employment as athletic coaches. This certificate fills that gap by creating a clearly defined occupational pathway for students interested in coaching in educational and community-based settings.

The program also supports stackable credentialing opportunities. Students enrolled in Kinesiology and Exercise Science programs may complete the Athletic Coaching Certificate concurrently, enhancing employability and broadening career options without extending time to completion. As a result, the certificate expands completion opportunities while making efficient use of existing curriculum and instructional resources.

Annual Enrollment projects (non-duplicative)
