Catalog Description

The Administration of Justice Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students to meet the needs of entry-level positions in the broad field of law enforcement and security career fields. The curriculum will prepare students with a foundation in Administration of Justice/Law Enforcement and provide them with the knowledge to enter varied career areas. The skills developed during class will enhance the student’s knowledge in the area of the criminal justice system as well as an in-depth understanding of law enforcement, criminal law and procedures, forensic evidence examination and the judicial process.

Purpose and Goals of Degree/Certificate:

 

The purpose of the Certificate of Achievement inAdministration of Justice is to provide the student with selected basic core courses to meet the needs of entry-level positions or re-skilling of current public safety professionals in preparation for employment/promotion in the administration of justice field. The Administration of Justice certificate program consists of courses in an introduction to the administration of justice, criminal procedures, law/legal aspects of evidence and community relations.

 

The goal of this program is to meet the needs of the students who are interested in pursuing careers in or advancing careers in the myriad of fields within Administration of Justice, such as Police Officers, RecordsClerks, Dispatchers, Community Service Officers, Custody Assistants, Cadets,Parking Control Officers, Code Enforcement Officers, Probation Officers,Security Officers, Crime Scene Investigators, Arson and Fraud Investigators, Analysts,Private Investigators, Interns and a host of opportunities within State and federal government. Possession of such a certificate will demonstrate to employing agencies and companies an orientation to the profession and a basic level of knowledge that is often times lacking from entry level applicants. Such a certificate can benefit a student/applicant’s employability in entry-level positions.

 

 

Specific Objectives of Degree/Certificate:

 

The program and Certificate of Achievement in Administration of Justice will provide students seeking employment in the area of criminal justice a general and basic understanding of the criminal justice system.  The topics explored will offer an in-depth understanding of law enforcement, forensic evidence examination, criminal law, the judicial process and other areas with the criminal justice and administration of justice system.  

 

Upon completion of the course curriculum, the student will have a general and basic understanding of the administration of the justice system and all of its associated issues, including the ability to:

 

  1. Apply legal definitions, concepts, and principles to law enforcement, courts, or correctional settings.
  2. Describe the organizations of the criminal justice systems and how the components within it work and are inter-related.
  3. Communicate information in a clear and organized manner.
  4. Analyze ethical dilemmas encountered in the law enforcement and/or correctional fields and decide on the correct ethical choice.
  5. Adapt to the diverse and multicultural nature of American society in the criminal justice system.
  6. Apply constitutional, statutory, procedural, and case law to real-life criminal justice situations.
  7. Contrast the court procedures that occur from arrest through appeal.
  8. Discuss the legal aspects of courtroom criminal evidence, especially as they apply in California courts.
  9. Discuss the various types of evidence presented in court.
  10. Articulate knowledge and skills are necessary for entry-level positions within various parts of the profession, including understanding contemporary issues in the field.
