The Data Analytics AS degree is an expansion on the CIS department Data Science Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement and prepares students for careers as data analyst, data scientist, machine learning engineers, business analyst, computer systems analyst, logistics analyst, marketing analyst, and database managers. The multidisciplinary program provides the analytical, methodological, and programming skills required in data processing, information technology, business, and computing. The certificate will also serve as a foundation for continued education at four-year institutions

The Data Analytics AS degree is an expansion on the CIS department Data Science Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement. Students will learn the fundamentals of data science, statistical analysis, relational databases, database management using SQL, and programming. Additionally, the courses included in the certificate could be used as a basis for a bachelor degree in Computer Information Systems, Business, Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Programming, Math or used to fulfill general education requirements for a two- or four-year degrees.

Item 1. Program Goals and Objectives
The Data Analytics AS degree is an expansion on the CIS department Data Science Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement. Students will learn the fundamentals of data science, statistical analysis, relational databases, database management using SQL, and programming. Additionally, the courses included in the certificate could be used as a basis for a bachelor degree in Computer Information Systems, Business, Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Programming, Math or used to fulfill general education requirements for a two- or four-year degrees.
Program Outcomes
- Demonstrate the ability to apply statistical analysis of real world data using multiple representations such as graphs, text, or tables, being mindful of concerns around data bias and privacy.
- Use programming and data analytics tools to make statistical inference on data and data sets using computational techniques.
- Write computer scripts and programs to organize, produce visualizations, and numerical summaries of data and data sets.

Item 4. Master Planning
Fall 2023- The CIS 118, Math 118, CIS 116, and Math 116 are new courses created to support the Data Analytics AS degree.
The other courses that are part of the certificate are already offered consistently.
Item 5. Enrollment and Completer Projections
Interest in the Data Analytics AS degree is expected to be modest at first and grow quickly through marketing efforts to bring this program into broader community awareness. Enrollment and completion of Data Analytics AS degree are projected to be at least 20 students per year completing after the inaugural first two years of this program.
Item 6. Place of Program in Curriculum/Similar Programs
a) There are not active inventory records that need to be changed in connection with the approval of the proposed program.
b) This program does not replace any existing programs on the college’s inventory.
c) Laney will be the only campus in the district with a Data Science Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement. Laney's MATH department is creating a Data Science AS.
