Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Building Codes and Inspections provides fundamental knowledge about why building codes are required by law and implemented to protect public safety. The goals of this program also include ensuring the student learning outcomes help to improve the career readiness of CM students. To be competitive in the market place students must be able to interpret the minimum design and construction standards set forth by the California Building Standards Code, California Code of Regulation, Title 24 for both residential and nonresidential buildings.

Program Goal

The Construction Management degree and certificate programs can be completed in 2-years-or-less and prepare students to manage both residential and nonresidential construction projects. Students will gain career-ready skills through analysis, interpretation, application and problem-solving curriculum. Program curriculum includes the fundamentals in best practice related to project management, scheduling, estimating, building codes and standards, inspections, legal aspects of construction and risk management. In addition, emphasis is placed on sustainable construction practices and the specific role the California Energy Standards and other 3rd party green building rating systems has on the built-environment. This program includes curriculum related to green building certification through several pathways including LEED fundamentals.

 Item 1.            Program Goals and Objectives

The Certificate of Achievement in Building Codes and Inspections provides fundamental knowledge about why building codes are required by law and implemented to protect public safety. The goals of this program also include ensuring the student learning outcomes help to improve the career readiness of CM students. To be competitive in the market place students must be able to interpret the minimum design and construction standards set forth by the California Building Standards Code, California Code of Regulation, Title 24 for both residential and nonresidential buildings.

Program Outcomes

  1. Illustrate the ability to reference the Uniform Building Code and the Title 24 California Standards Code for both residential and nonresidential buildings.
  2. Identify building code triggers by evaluating project scope of work for residential buildings.
  3. Interpret the Uniform Building Code and the California Building Standards Code, California Code of Regulation, Title 24 to illustrate what design criteria is suitable for a range of project scenarios.

Item 2.            Catalog Description

The Building Codes and Inspections Certificate of Achievement program is designed to prepare students for a variety of construction industry careers. This program fosters comprehension and application of building codes and standards. Students who successfully complete this program will be able to apply the Uniform Building Code and the California Code of Regulations, Title 24 fundamentals to the built environment. Students will become fluent in referencing, analyzing, interpreting and applying Title 24. Students will be prepared for careers in inspections, building and planning, site supervision, project management and as licensed contractors. This program can be completed in 2-years or less.

Our current Building Codes and Inspections Certificate of Proficiency is being converted to a Certificate of Achievement to provide students additional green building code compliance curriculum to improve career-readiness.

Item 5.            Enrollment and Completer Projections

Interest in this  Building Code and Inspections CA in is expected to be modest at first and grow quickly through marketing efforts to bring this program into broader community awareness.  Enrollment and completion of the Building Code and Inspections CA are projected to be at least 8-12 per year after inaugural first two years of this program.

a)      There are no active inventory records that need to be changed in connection with the approval of the proposed program.

b)     This program does not replace any existing program on the college’s inventory. 

c)      This certificate will replace a CP that Laney’s CONMT currently has (it is being deactivated). Laney is the only college in Peralta that has a CONMT department.
