Catalog Description

The General Motors Advanced Certificate option prepares students for employment as an entry-level automotive technician at a General Motors (GM) dealership. Courses focus on both the mechanical and electric systems within a vehicle and how to diagnose and repair them. They include automatic transaxle/transmission, HVAC, diesel technology, advanced electrical systems, and advanced engine performance. Students will also increase their hands-on skills and experience by working in the field. Graduates are employed as entry-level technicians at GM dealers and have the ability to work as a bumper-to-bumper technician or as a specialized automotive repair technician.

Program Goal

The program goal is to provide training that will assist students in becoming entry level automotive technicians at General Motors dealerships.

Below are the program objectives:

  • Demonstrate safe practices when working on all types of vehicles.
  • Practice advanced electrical system diagnosis and repair.
  • Demonstrate proficiency when using a General Motors specific scan tool.
  • Practice repairing faults related to automatic transaxle/transmission, advanced electrical systems, HVAC, diesel technology, and advanced engine performance.
  • Apply knowledge and hands-on skills when working in the field.

Program Requirements Narrative

Students are required to be working at a General Motors dealership. They will be continuing courses on individual vehicles systems such as automatic transaxle/transmission, HVAC, diesel technology, advanced electrical systems, and advanced engine performance. Students will also be gaining more hands-on skills while working in the field. 

The program was approved and recommended by the Cerritos College Automotive Department advisory committee on March 28, 2019.
