Floral Design Operations Certificate of Achievement

The Floral Design Operations Certificate at Cuyamaca College provides students with foundational and advanced skills in floral arrangement, event-specific design, and industry experience.

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

• Create professional floral arrangements using fundamental and advanced design techniques
• Design floral compositions for various occasions, including weddings, corporate events, and special celebrations.
• Apply industry standards in flower selection, handling, and care to ensure quality and longevity.
• Develop business and customer service skills relevant to the floral industry, including pricing, marketing, and sales.
• Gain hands-on experience through work-based learning, preparing them for employment or entrepreneurship in the floral design field.
• Understand the principles of small business management, equipping them to start or manage a floral business successfully.

Approximately 15 to 17 students successfully completed the introductory course each year during the last 2 year period. Assuming similar retention and progression rates throughout the program's subsequent courses, it's reasonable to estimate that the program could expect around 15 completers annually.

Cuyamaca currently currently has a 33 unit Floral Design COA. However, many of the enrolled  students do not complete because they become employed in the industry . This new certificate utilizing existing courses provides a stackable certificate to allow students to gain skills necessary to work in the floral industry or start a floral design business in a COA specific to that employment goal.  The new  Floral Design Operations Certificate at Cuyamaca College is designed to provide students with the essential skills and knowledge required for employment in the floral industry or to start their own floral business. This occupational program emphasizes hands-on training in floral arrangement techniques, event-specific designs, and industry standards for flower selection and care. Students will also develop business and customer service skills, including pricing, marketing, and sales, to successfully operate within the floral industry. Through work-based learning opportunities, students will gain practical experience, preparing them for careers in retail floral shops, event planning, or entrepreneurial ventures. The program also supports lifelong learning by fostering creativity, problem-solving, and industry adaptability, ensuring students remain competitive in the evolving floral market.

The Floral Design Operations Certificate at Cuyamaca College provides students with the technical skills and industry knowledge necessary for a successful career in floral design and business operations. The program requires the completion of specialized courses that cover fundamental and advanced floral design techniques, event-specific floral arrangements, and essential business principles.   Students begin with Floral Design I (OH 114) to develop a strong foundation in floral arranging, followed by Floral Design II (OH 116) to refine their skills with more advanced techniques. Courses such as Weddings I (OH 117) and Special Occasions (OH 118)  allow students to specialize in event-based floral design. Additionally, the  Work Experience (OH 290)  course provides hands-on industry training, allowing students to apply their skills in a real-world setting. To complement their floral expertise, students also take  Introduction to Business (BUS 110)  to gain essential business knowledge, including marketing, customer service, and entrepreneurship.
