Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The proposed award represents an exciting interdisciplinary academic pathway between the Entrepreneurship and Child Development programs that synthesizes coursework into a coherent course of study at Miramar college. The program would be a pathway at the college geared towards understanding the business and management side of child development services. This award would serve a unique and growing population of students at Miramar College by offering business-oriented coursework focused on early education, which is different from the existing child development awards offered by the San Diego Community College District.

The San Diego Community College District currently offers certificates, degrees, and transfer options in the field of Child Development/Early Childhood Education. The FAMILY CHILD CARE Certificate offered at City, Mesa, and Miramar and the HOME DAY CARE Certificate offered at Mesa provides skills and knowledge for child care in family settings. The FAMILY AND CHILD RELATIONS Certificate offered at Miramar prepares students to work with families and their children in educational settings and service-related agencies. The INFANT/TODDLER CARE Certificate of Performance offers skills for working with children aged birth to three years. The SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE Certificate of Performance offered at City and Mesa provides training for working with school-age children. The ASSISTANT TEACHER Certificate of Achievement prepares an individual to work in public and private child care settings. The Certificate of Achievement options, ASSISTANT TEACHER, ASSOCIATE TEACHER, TEACHER, and MASTER TEACHER, prepares individuals for higher-level instructional positions. The ASSISTANT TEACHER, ASSOCIATE TEACHER, TEACHER, and MASTER TEACHER certificates meet the requirements for the State of California Child Development Permits. The Child Development Associate of Science Degrees prepares students for teacher, master teacher, director, and site supervisory positions.

Similar Programs at Other Colleges in Service Area

MiraCosta College(another Region 10 Community College) offers a Site Supervisor Certificate ofAchievement and Associate Degree in their Child Development(CHLD) discipline.

Palomar College offers a Certificate of Achievement and A.S. Degree in Child Development Early ChildhoodAdministration.

City and Mesa Colleges offer Certificates of Performance, Certificates of Achievement, and Associate of Science Degrees in Child Development.

However, these programs and awards differ from the award proposed here, which is fundamentally multidisciplinary in joining together child development with business: the proposed award incorporates an extensive focus on business and business-related topics through coursework assigned to the Accounting, Business, and Entrepreneurship subject areas/departments. Therefore, the awards proposed by Miramar would differ from other child development programs in the region.

MiraCosta endorses based on Jesse's input that addresses COE concerns. It will be interesting to see how the program evolves in terms of those who provided letters coming through with jobs as it appears there is an oversupply that they could draw employees from depending on location.

SD Miramar college submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with caution when developing a program and defers to the region for a program modification because 1) this occupations’ entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage; but 2) there is an estimated oversupply in the region. However, because the program includes an entrepreneurial component, the COE defers to the region.

Regional CTE Deans, Please note, the COE report does not indicate a supply gap and recommends we proceed with caution. However, various letters of support are attached from advisory board members. Additionally, minutes and survey results from our advisory board clearly indicate support to develop the proposed program. Please let me know if you have any questions. -Jesse
