This program provides foundational education in urban design, land use planning, and policy-making. Students will learn to tackle planning challenges using industry-standard GIS software and understand the socio-economic aspects of urban development. The curriculum promotes skills for entry-level roles in planning agencies or consultancies and supports transfer to bachelor's degree programs through strategic course selection. Graduates will be equipped to contribute to sustainable and resilient community planning.
Program Student Learning Outcome(s)
1. Analyze program transfer requirements to prepare for successful transfer to a university-level urban planning degree program.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in urban planning methodologies, such as spatial analysis, community engagement, and policy development, to devise sustainable and inclusive urban environments.
The program expects 15 students to complete each year. The state issues 760 Associate degrees with this top code annually.

The Urban Planning program at Long Beach City College equips students with key competencies for urban planning careers, including sustainable design, policy analysis, and GIS technology. Targeted careers range from urban planners to GIS technicians. The curriculum also prepares students for transfer to baccalaureate programs in Urban Planning or Environmental Design, aligning with the requirements of institutions like CalPoly Pomona, ensuring a smooth transition to advanced education.
For successful transfer to the third year at CalPoly Pomona, students must complete the CSU-GE-Breadth or IGETC pattern.

The Urban Planning program at Long Beach City College steadfastly supports the LBCC Mission by committing to equitable student learning and success, academic excellence, and workforce development, delivering high-quality educational programs and services to our diverse communities. No additional facilities are required as our program leverages the latest in technology-enabled learning environments and digital resources, eliminating the need for additional physical space or equipment.
