Catalog Description

The courses listed are required to meet the requirements of the Court Reporter's Board.  This program was accredited by the CR Board on March 7, 1978.  Academic courses completed in Adult Education or a private Court Reporting School are not transferable.  To earn a certificate, complete the required courses as listed with a grade of C or better.  At least 50 percent of all course work must be completed at Cypress College.  Students must furnish their own machine and paper.  This certificate requires a total of 29 units.

Program Goal

The goals of the certificate are to provide training for students to excel in court reporting and to become eligible to take the state licensing examination with the Court Reporters Board in order to become a Certified Shorthand  Reporter in the state of California.  This program will also prepare students to take the National Court Reporter's Association testing program for the Registered Professional Reporter license.  The program goal is 220 words per minute on the stenographic machine.

Program Requirements Narrative

Students will acquire the necessary skills, knowledge, and ability to take dictation at 225 words per minute, along with the academic preparation and technological training and knowhow to be employed in the field of official court reporting and Federal court reporting, including depositions and hearings.   The goal of the program is to prepare the student for the  Registered Professional Reporter's Examination and the California state Certified Shorthand Reporter Examination.
