Catalog Description

The Addiction Counseling Studies Bachelor of Science Degree (120 units total, 73 units in the major) prepares students for careers in the substance abuse counseling field. Upon completion of this program, students will be able to perform the tasks associated with the treatment of substance use disorders including intake, establishing goals and treatment plans, and relapse prevention support. In addition, instruction regarding establishing and maintaining prevention programs that involve education regarding substance use disorders, the impact of substance use on individuals and families, and resources available to assist with intersecting concerns such as socioeconomic status and mental illness will be provided. Finally, information regarding family dynamics, support for family, friends, and community members impacted by substance use disorder, and knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral processes are examined in this program.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Cerro Coso Community College has had a successful Addiction Counseling program for three years which continues to grow and expand. With the anticipation of continued growth in the need for these employees, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting a 13% increase, we need to expand our program to a bachelor's level to serve our region and state. Our previous and current students are in the pipeline for a bachelor's program. Additionally, other community colleges with similar associate level programs can direct their students to our program which will be offered online. We anticipate 20 enrollments in the first year, increasing incrementally by four each year with a cap of 35 total.

Program Goal

Program goal is to address an occupational need in the region. The addiction counseling studies program will give new dimension to the vocational programs of the college and will increase the offering of related psychology and human services courses. The Addiction Counseling Studies Associate in Science degree is a comprehensive program that meets state mandated credit requirements and the requirements of the state-approved certifying agency.

Addiction counseling professionals are in critical demand to provide services for individuals struggling with substance use disorder and the families and communities in which they live. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that at about 13%, labor market demand for substance abuse counselors will grow faster than other occupations, with entry-level earnings higher than the living wage in the region. The addiction counseling studies program will work with regional directors, the advisory committee, and local industry in the expansion of programs to address the shortage of addiction counseling workers in the region. A bachelor’s degree allows addiction counselors to advance credentials and move into management positions, in which they can mentor and assist newly trained helpers As such, communities and agencies may benefit from the availability of a bachelor’s degree. In the Cerro Coso Community College service area, we serve five counties that extend 8,500 square miles from Tehachapi to Lee Vining to Death Valley and Kern River Valley. Our expansive service area is primarily rural and remote, with no California State University adjacent to it. We serve one of the largest Naval Research facilities (Naval Air Warfare Center at China Lake) and various school districts in a remote region. Additionally, we serve Tehachapi Correctional Institution, hospitals, police departments, and non-profit agencies providing mental health services. All of these employers and our large service area communities could benefit from an influx of substance abuse counselors with advanced training and education.
