Catalog Description

This program offers students the opportunity to earn a certificate of achievement in film production, which prepares students for a career in the film, television, and media industries. Students develop creativity and production skills and experience the film production process from pitching ideas through editing the final film.Students will participate in a collaborative, team-oriented learning experience that mirrors the film industry production process. The program goal is to provide the skills necessary to enter this dynamic and creative industry.

Some examples where students can find employment using their film production skills are working on film crews, joining a film or television production company, assisting at a talent agency, creating corporate videos, assisting the production of business training or real estate videos, and assisting in an advertising or marketing agency.

To earn the certificate of achievement students must complete the required courses with a minimum of grade of “C” or higher. Some courses are available in both online and traditional formats. The certificate can be completed in 1 year full-time or 2years part-time study.

Program Goal

The program goal is occupational. Many jobs in the film industry seek applicants who are able to demonstrate basic film production skills and knowledge. Students who would like to prepare for careers in the film industry, but are not pursuing a degree, will be able instead to earn a certificate of achievement. The certificate will demonstrate they have had an introduction to the entire film production process, from script writing - to filming - to editing, including hands-on experience. This certificate demonstrates that students have studied these skills, including producing work samples for an online portfolio. For students looking to enter the film production industry, the advantage of this certificate is they may achieve it in as little as two semesters of focused work that covers the entire film production process, from script writing through editing.

Program Requirements Narrative

The proposed certificate of achievement meets the mission of DVC by adding a new opportunity for career education for students who wish to find employment in the film industry. This its with the mission of California Community Colleges by contributing to continuous workforce improvement. DVC college currently offers an AA and AS-T in Television Arts as well as a Certificate of Achievement in Television Studio and Certificates of Accomplishment in Film Production, TV Studio, and Writing for the Digital Medium. This new certificate would supplement the learning completed in the 9-unit Certificate of Accomplishment in film production by adding courses in screen writing, audio, and film studies, with more opportunities for students to create projects for a final portfolio.

Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
There are eight community colleges in the Bay Area offering degrees and certificates with the Television TOP code (including combined TV/film/video), and four colleges offer degrees and certificates with the Film Production TOP codes. These are graduating a total of 148 students annually. The workforce data report indicated a significant annual under supply of 1,545 students in the Bay Region in Video Production. Since there were no new courses developed for this certificate, there should be no adverse impacts to other programs in the region. This new certificate merely adds an option for DVC students.
