Program Requirements Narrative

As a replacement of an existing skills certificate, the Costume Design Level 1 certificate of achievement will continue meet the objectives and conditions of higher education and community college education. This career and technical education certificate that leads to jobs in the industry directly aligns with the college mission to “empower students from the diverse communities it serves to achieve their educational and career goals by providing learner-centered pathways to success through transfer, career and technical education, and foundational skills programs.”

The Educational and Strategic Master Plan calls for improving college effectiveness through ongoing and systematic cycles of improvement that accomplish the college mission and educational strategic plan. A state-approved certificate will improve student choices for educational objectives and job opportunities. The creation of a new certificate increases student success by providing support and guidance to promote student completion of degrees, certificates, and transfer-readiness.

As the college is already offering a similar program (Costume Design Level 1 skills certificate) faculty are available to teach this program and no additional resources are required.

Ongoing program review demonstrates continuous efforts in quality improvement, including periodic review of  institution set standards for student achievement, which includes statistical information regarding completions of certificates and job placements. This certificate of achievement qualifies students for careers in costuming, costume design, and related industries and will continue to support job placements in the industry.

New Program

Place of program in college's curriculum/similar program.
Costume Design Level 1 existing skills certificate will be discontinued and replaced by the Certificate of Achievement.
List similar programs at other colleges in the Los Angeles and Orange County Region.
In the LACCD district, Pierce offers a Theater: Costume AA Degree. East LA College received approval for a new Costume Design & Technology Certificate of Achievement in 2018. Unlike the ELAC certificate, the LACC Costume Design level 1 certificate can be accomplished in 1 year. This proposed certificate is a revised version of an existing skills certificate that has been successfully offered at LACC for many years. LACC participates regularly in District Discipline Committee meetings comprised of Theater faculty from all schools in the District. The community colleges with the most completions in the region are LACC, Saddleback, and Mt. San Antonio. As such, LACC is primed to continue offering a high number of awards in costume design to students in its service area. Other colleges offer certificates in Technical Theater Technology. Those technology certificates focus on areas such as scenery, lighting, and other theater technology skills rather than costuming.
