This certificate program fits within the Administration of Justice Department and is a career technical education program supporting future and incumbent criminal justice professionals.  It furthers the college’s workforce training mission and supports students who seek to transfer to a 4-yearinstitution.  This program relates to the Child, Family Studies and Education program and supports those students seeking work with troubled youth or as a teacher at a juvenile detention facility.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Analyze principles and applications of statutory and Constitutional law, particularly the requirements adhered to by law enforcement, courts, and corrections.
  2. Produce written communications that meet the standards for transfer and a criminal justice system professional.
  3. Critically examine contemporary problems and issues within criminal justice.
  4. Examine bias and cultural competence in the criminal justice system.

Napa Valley College currently provides entry-level and in-service workforce training for law enforcement officers, 9-1-1 dispatchers, and correctional officers. There are approximately 90,000 law enforcement officers and 9-1-1 dispatchers and 37,000 correctional officers working in California.

California has 7781 juvenile probation officers working in 58 counties throughout the state. There are currently 22 school districts all over California that have their own police departments.  School resource officers are commonplace in California’s 1322 high schools.  This certificate program will support students seeking work in any of these kinds of positions.

The Administration of Justice Department prepares students for this sizeable workforce.  This certificate program provides an additional step in the pathway to a two-year degree and or transfer to a 4-years institution.
