Catalog Description

This two-semester program covers the fundamentals of Electronics Technology plus additional coursework in other areas of specialty. It is composed of the same 12 unit coursework from the Electronics Technology Level 1 certificate plus 12 additional elective units chosen from other electronics courses within the Electronics Department. This certificate allows students the flexibility to combine Electronics courses to meet individual goals in a specialty of their choosing. This Level 2 certificate will prepare students with the requisite knowledge for subsequent Electronics certificates and degrees.  The following courses are acceptable for the 12 additional elective units: ELEC 11, ELEC 12, ELEC 51,ELEC 53, ELEC 54A, ELEC 54B, ELEC 55, ELEC 61, ELEC 74, TECH 60, *ELEC 10, *ELEC 62, *ELEC 76, and *CNET 56. Courses with an asterisk do not apply towards the current Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology A.S. degree and certificate.

  • Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
Program Goal

Upon completing the Certificate of Achievement in Electronics Technology Level 2, students achieve competencies in the basics of Electronics Technology including direct current, alternating current and digital electronics as well as 12 units of work within a specialty of their choosing.  Many of our students come looking to complete a specific number of units in order to be considered eligible for promotion, yet many do not obtain a certificate as a result since the course work path they choose may not fulfill the requirements of any of our current certificates. This certificate can be obtained within a year and will give students the ability to specialize in an area of their choosing, and will lead to entry level positions as electronics technicians. Depending on the electives chosen, students will have a wide variety of skills within test/measurement, calculation and hardware, as well as all the previous skills obtained within the level 1 certificate. This program differs from other CTE programs at the college in that it has a flexible, elective driven format that can be completed within two semesters. Further, this certificate is a laddered certificate that can be applied towards subsequent level electronics technology certificates and A.S.degree.

New Program

Place of program in college's curriculum/similar program.
Electronics and Computer Networking Technology Department
List similar programs at other colleges in the Los Angeles and Orange County Region.
Rio Hondo and Los Angeles Trade Tech are the only schools in our college service area that offer a somewhat similar certificate to the one being proposed. Both programs were contacted but we did not receive and feedback. This new degree will not cause undue competition with an existing program since it’s objective is to serve current students. Rio Hondo’s program consists of an Associates Degree in Electronics Technology using 32 units of Electronics Technology courses plus general education courses. This degree is dissimilar to this certificate in that this is a two semester laddered certificate meant to serve our current students better. L.A. Trade Tech’s program consists of an electronics communications certificate and degree which has a different emphasis and targets a different market and outcome. This is just a restructuring of our current certificates, thus will not impact other schools.
