Catalog Description

The fitness coach certificate program will allow students to gain the basic skills of working within a fitness facility while preparing them for various general capacities within a fitness facility that require less technical ability than more independent positions. Completion of the certificate requirements will prepare students with entry level knowledge regarding the modern state of health and fitness, define the varying scopes of practice in the fitness industry, and give prospective to differentiate evidence-based practices from fitness fads and myths. To earn a certificate of achievement, a student must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a grade of “C” or higher.

Enrollment Completer Projections

We project 5 - 10 students to earn this certificate annually.

  • Certificate of Achievement: 8 to fewer than 16 semester (or 12 to fewer than 24 quarter) units (B)
Program Goal

This entry level certificate provides an opportunity to be more inclusive and equitable for all students in search of general employment within the fitness industry. The existing 24-unit certificate of achievement in personal training is too much for some students to commit to – they need something more condensed. This program enhancement was suggested by the program advisory committee to help meet their needs and the needs of students/potential employees. This certificate of achievement contains some of the core courses of the persona training certificate while requiring less units. This will provide knowledge and skills necessary for entry level employment in various general capacities within a fitness facility that require less technical ability than more independent positions. The intent is to capture more students who are exploring the industry with a less intimidating option.

Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
Even though there is historic and current high demand for this type of employment within the fitness industry, there is no other program available within our service area. This certificate is an enhancement to an existing program that helps further meet the needs of students and employers.
