Program Goal

The Certificate of Achievement in Introduction to Social Media Incorporates courses in the area of specialization in Social Media content creation and Marketing. The need for skills in Social Media content creation – the understanding of developing a social media campaign are highlighted in the growing need for social media specialists in the Bay Area.    A majority of high schools offer Media and EntertainmentAcademies. Students from these programs have limited choices in pursuing SocialMedia content creation when they graduate from high school. After completing the introduction to  Social Media certificate, students may choose from multiple pathway options, including the larger Social Media Storytelling Certificate,  applied computer graphics, Motion Graphics and Video Production. Growth in the field of Social Media specialist continues at a steady pace in the San Francisco Bay Area, however, the desire to increase diversity within the sector remains unmet.

Informed by industry resource needs as detailed in the labor market information as well as our Industry Advisory Board’s feedback, completion of this certificate will provide students with the coursework they need to work in entry-level social media positions such as social media project coordinators, online community manager, or social media assistant.

The following program learning outcomes were established to ensure students are prepared to secure entry-level positions:

Upon completion of the Introduction to SocialMedia Certificate of Achievement, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of digital multimedia equipment and software programs to create and edit multimedia works for social media applications.
  2. Work in environments modeled after real-world workplaces by building teams and leading them and/or taking direction from a project leader.
