The Computer Programming and Data Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement prepares students for careers as computer programmers, data analysts, data scientists, business analysts, computer systems analysts, logistics analysts, and marketing analysts. The Certificate supports high school students that are dual enrolled or concurrently enrolled as well as new students to the CIS department that take (3) foundational courses in applications, data, and programming. The certificate will also serve as a foundation for A.S. degree completion and support students in transferring to four-year institutions.

Item 1.            Program Goals and Objectives

This certificate provides a foundation for effective computer application use, data management, and computer programming fundamentals. Students will learn the fundamentals of data collection, organization, and use by computer systems, while building knowledge of computer application use and computer programming best practices. Additionally, the courses included in the certificate could be used as a basis for A.S Degree in Computer Programming, Data Analytics, Data Science, or Computer Information Systems. The certificate supports bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and Data Science.

Program Outcomes

  • Write computer scripts and programs to organize, produce visualizations, and numerical summaries of data and data sets.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation graphics applications.
  • Development Tools: Create programs using software development tools including editors, libraries and compilers

Interest in the Computer Programming and Data Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement is expected to be students eligible immediately upon approval. The courses that are part of the certificate are offered consistently and have consistent enrollment. Enrollment and completion of the Computer Programming and Data Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement are projected to be at least 20 students per year completing after the inaugural first two years of this program.
