Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training is designed for Kinesiology students who would like to pursue a career in a variety of sports medicine professions including but not limited to athletic training, physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy and coaching. Sports Medicine is a multidisciplinary educational experience and our program emphasizes lecture courses along with hands on clinical experience in our athletic training facility.  This program will give students a foundation of knowledge they  will need to be successful as they transfer to  a four-year institution to obtain a Bachelors Degree or as they join the workforce for entry level jobs such as a Physical Therapy Aide.  The primary areas of focus for this certificate will be the human body and how it functions as well as injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

Student Learning Outcomes include: 

    • Perform techniques of evaluation and care of athletic injuries with an increasing degree of proficiency under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer
    • Develop and apply treatment and rehabilitation protocols for athletic injuries under the direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer

Program Goal

Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a sports medicine/athletic training profession and/or educational plan. The information we provide to our students  can be used in a variety of professions; including coaching, athletic training, chiropractic care, physical therapy, personal training or many other allied healthcare professions.  It is essential for students who are focused in a career under the sports medicine umbrella to have basic understanding of the human body and how it functions, as well as evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.  Through our courses students will be exposed to educational content as well as skill building.  With this certificate students will have more opportunities in the work force in entry level positions such as physical therapy aide and personal training.  The education they receive will also set them up to be successful as they transfer to a four-year institution to meet the requirements of their educational and professional goals.

Course Objectives:

  • To instruct and advise students in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.
  • Give students an understanding of the athletic training profession
  • Teach students how evaluate and identify common sports related injuries and develop a plan of initial care
  • Teach students how to develop a rehabilitation plan for an injured person
  • Observe postural deficiencies and body mechanics that may predispose a person to injury
  • To instruct students on techniques to prepare student-athletes for practice or competition including taping, bandaging, wrapping and bracing.
  • Ability to identify major musculoskeletal components of human body
  • Understand the inflammatory process and how to assist the healing process
  • Give students an understanding of the physiology of working muscles and the effects on the prevention of injuries through fitness training
  • Understand the inflammatory process and application of therapeutic modalities and exercises to assist the healing process
  • Understand and perform the daily operational tasks of an athletic training facility
  • In addition, the Sports Medicine/ Athletic Training Certificate will provide students interested in careers in athletic training and sports medicine with opportunities to gain valuable knowledge and practical experience in the athletic training and sports medicine setting.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Certificate of Achievement can be completed along with the Cabrillo College Kinesiology AA-T, or as a stand alone certificate.  The majority of professions under the Sports Medicine umbrella will require a minimum of a Bachelors Degree. However completion of this certificate will assist students in obtaining employment as a Physical Therapy Aide, Personal Trainer or other entry level allied health jobs.
