Catalog Description

The Electrician Trainee Certificate of Achievement is designed to enable students to obtain the necessary entry-level skills to become more employable in the electrical industry in areas such as residential wiring, industrial wiring, commercial wiring, facility maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical circuits and equipment. Irvine Valley College is a state-approved provider (Approved School Number 125) of Electrician Training under Assembly Bill 1087, which allows students to apply for the electrical trainee in California and receive the Electrician-in-Training Card.

The College's commitment to student success is supported by the dedication of the members of the Electrical Technology Department to help students master electrical concepts, industry-driven technical standards and codes, as well as achieve their educational goals.

The primary mission of the Electrical Technology Program is to provide college students with a cost-effective pathway to technical employment in fields related to electrical technologies.

Program Goal

1. Develop students' ability to predict or calculate the behavior or performance of specified electrical, residential or commercial wiring circuit or solar photovoltaic system;

2. Develop students' ability to troubleshoot a given non-functioning piece of electrical equipment or residential wiring circuit or solar photovoltaic system, and indicate the nature of the fault and remedy of the fault.

3. Develop students' ability to properly perform specified tests and measurements on current, voltage, resistance, and efficiency, on electrical motors, power panels, lighting circuits, electrical outlets, transformers, electrical devices, control circuits, and commercial operating systems;

4. Develop students' ability to use electrical wire, devices, equipment, tools, NEC code book, and blueprints to install and test an electrical project assigned by the instructor;

5. Develop students' critical thinking skills, so they will be able to apply scientific reasoning to solve problems using electrical principles, and become active problem-solvers in their chosen fields.

6. Develop students' ability to effectively communicate technical information to electrical and non-electrical persons.

Program Requirements Narrative

This electrician trainee certificate aligns with the mission by providing a certificate program that prepares students for employment and further education for those that need to update and/or upgrade their knowledge on electrical systems.  According to the LMI report, there’s a need of 3,301 jobs in this field annually. Thus, this certificate will provide students with the knowledge and skills to go into the workforce
