Program Goal

The Business Studies Department at San Diego City College offers a wide variety of programs for both transfer and career-focused students. Programs are designed to provide students with the education they need to launch their own business or join an established business in an entry-level position. Completion of these programs equips students with strategies, plans, procedures, and policies that guide a business and prepares students to work in a variety of positions in retail, corporate establishments, small businesses, human resources, and other business settings.

The Certificate of Achievement in Business Administration provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the field of business and those entering the workforce. Students will gain the skillset to pursue executive and managerial positions in various business environments. It is also designed for those pursuing the Associate in Science in Business Administration 2.0 for Transfer Degree. The course requirements in the certificate direct students towards the associate degree for transfer (ADT) as well as transfer to other universities with a Business Administration major.

San Diego City College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program because 1) a supply gap exists; 2) the occupations’ entry-level earnings are above the living wage; and 3) there is a high number of annual job openings. However, given the large number of institutions that already offer related programs, the COE encourages colleges to proceed strategically and in coordination with regional partners to reduce program overlap and ensure that program titles, outcomes, and pathways clearly align with specific career opportunities in Business & Entrepreneurship.

An additional comment from Professor Shana Carr, department chair for the Business department at SDCC: SDCC plans to use this new certificate in two ways: to support a connection between our CoP Pathways and the ADT degree, and for those returning to school that may not need the GE prep and do not intend to transfer. While there are many related certificates and degrees in business, none bridge this gap between CoP and ADT.
