Catalog Description

The study of automotive systems as they relate to the current generation of computer-controlled vehicles. Career paths in this discipline include automotive service technician, automotive service consultants, automotive parts sales people, vehicles modifiers in the alternate fuels and fuel cells.

This certificate prepare students and incumbent employees for entry-level positions at local automotive dealerships, independent repair facilities, national repair chains, fleets, and parts suppliers. In addition, this certificate satisfies prerequisite introduction courses for Advanced Transportation Technologies, Automotive Technology and all Career Concentration Certificates offered. The applicable courses are National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) compliant, meet the standards of National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3), and integrate Mopar College Automotive Program (CAP) Local levels 0 and 1 online coursework

This certificate paves the way for students to gain an Associate’s Degree in Advanced Transportation and Automotive Technology, which engulfs a wide spectrum of automotive certifications and licensing. Many automotive courses offered, including this certificate are designed with National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE); a professional certification group that certifies professionals and shops in the automotive repair and service industry in the United States and parts of Canada in mind.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Certificate goals: Upon completion, courses required for this certificate provide student with entry-level skills to enter the automotive work force.

Program Goal

Automotive Introductions certificate incorporates introduction classes from each main area within the automotive program. Completion of this certificate ensures student progression in both Advanced Transportation Technology and Automotive Technology degree’s. In addition, to all certificates offered.

Based upon the program goals, objectives appropriate to these goals, this certificates design consistent of the emphasis on engine performance, emission systems, vehicle computer controls, electronic controls and vehicle system diagnostics used in both conventional and alternate fueled vehicles. As students’ progress through this certificate, they will be exposed to other aspects of the transportation industry that include personal planning, development of individual and team working skills, development of advanced technical knowledge, health and safety, and environmental issues.

This certificate meets community needs in accordance with the community college mission by preparing students for entry-level positions at local automotive dealerships, independent repair facilities, national repair chains, fleets, and parts suppliers.

College of the Desert’s automotive curriculum includes course offerings that provide a general overview of the discipline as well as specific courses in steering, suspension, braking systems, both automatic and manual transmission, air conditioning, electrical systems, engine management and emission control systems.
