Program Requirements Narrative

Automotive Technology – Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate of Achievement

The Automotive Department at Cuyamaca College is proposing the introduction of a new Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate of Achievement to address workforce demands and provide students with a streamlined pathway into the automotive industry. This certificate is designed as a short-term credential incorporating existing courses that can be completed within one year, equipping students with the essential skills needed to enter the workforce as maintenance and light repair technicians. This stackable certificate will allow automotive technology students to enter the workforce and be a completer sooner than existing certificate/degree completion requirements. Completion will allow students to continue the automotive technology degree program after certificate completion and be employed while doing so.

Rationale and Industry Need

The development of this certificate is a direct response to feedback from our community and industry partners, who have expressed the need for a short-term training program that prepares students for entry-level positions in the automotive repair sector. The advisory board has highlighted the growing demand for skilled technicians capable of performing maintenance and light repair services, which are fundamental to vehicle safety and operational efficiency. The attached advisory board meeting minutes document the discussions and recommendations supporting the implementation of this program.

Program Benefits

  1. Career Readiness: The curriculum focuses on foundational skills in vehicle maintenance and minor repairs, ensuring graduates are job-ready.
  2. Industry Demand: The certificate meets the needs of employers seeking technicians with specialized training in general vehicle upkeep.
  3. Student Retention and Advancement: Many of the courses in this certificate overlap with existing degree programs, allowing students pursuing a two-year degree to obtain this credential along the way, thus enhancing retention and completion rates.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Students will gain proficiency in performing repairs and inspections in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety regulations.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Maintenance and Light Repair Certificate of Achievement, students will be able to:

  • Accurately describe various vehicle conditions related to maintenance and safety.
  • Perform repairs and adjustments of components related to maintenance and safety.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in a diverse setting that includes colleagues, clients, and supervisors.
  • Comply with environmental health and safety regulations at the state and federal levels.

Cuyamaca College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. While a supply gap exists for this occupation, the available LMI recommends proceeding with caution when developing a program because 1) entry-level earnings are above the living wage for the occupation and 2) a supply gap exists. However, there is a large number of programs that exist for the profession.
