Associate Teacher Skills Certificate

Child Development/Early Care and Education (130500)

Upon completion of the following courses with grades of “C” or better, a student will qualify for an Early Childhood Education Associate Teacher Skills Certificate . This certificate allows the student to work as a fully qualified teacher in a private early care and education (Title 22) program, serving infants/toddlers, preschool-age children, and school-age children in before-and-after school programs. Once the unit requirements for this certificate are fulfilled, it is recommended that students meet with a Human Development full time faculty member on how to obtain an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. With the Associate Teacher Child Development Permit, an individual can work as an assistant or associate teacher in a publicly funded (Title 5) early care and education program.

Course Report
This certificate provides the educational coursework that serves as the core curriculum to be a qualified Teacher in group care settings in the Early Childhood Education field. Students completing the coursework for this certificate meet the minimum requirements to be a fully qualified teacher in privately funded early childhood education programs (as required by Title 22 of the California Social Services Code of Regulations). With documented work experience, students also qualify as an associate teacher in publicly funded early childhood education programs (as required by Title 5 California Code of Regulations).
This skills certificate is in line with the goals and objectives of the Human Development/Early Childhood Education program as follows:
Ø Identify and evaluate factors that influence child/human development from various theoretical perspectives and current research findings.
Ø Analyze early childhood programs for developmentally appropriate practices and program effectiveness.
Ø Exhibit professionalism within the field of Early Childhood Education by demonstrating skills relevant to the field that include incorporating meaningful curriculum, content knowledge, culturally and linguistically appropriate learning environments, and observation, documentation, and assessment of young children.
This certificate will be awarded as a result of 12 units of Human Development/Early Childhood Education coursework,specifically the completion of the following four 3 (three) unit courses:
