Catalog Description

The Personal Training Certificate is designed to prepare students to be employed in the area of fitness training as personal trainers/instructors. The program is designed to provide theory-based training to prepare students to take the NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) certification, ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine, ACE (American Council on Exercise or NCSA-CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) certification preferred by major sports, health, and fitness clubs. The curriculum emphasizes the application of the structure and function of the human body as it applies to movement, integrating physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and methodologies of exercise technique, assessment, and programming.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Current students in the Porterville College Kinesiology degree program alone are sufficient to justify the addition of this certificate program. It is conservatively estimated that once the program is fully established that there will be no fewer than 15 annual completers. Currently, there are at least  60 kinesiology majors in 2 years. The inclusion of additional students interested in earning the Personal Trainer Certificate will undoubtedly raise this number.

  • Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
Program Goal

The Fitness/Personal Trainer Certificate allows students to enter the workforce directly after earning the certificate. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of fitness trainers and instructors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. As businesses, government, and insurance organizations continue to recognize the benefits of health and fitness programs for their employees, incentives to join gyms or other types of health clubs are expected to increase the need for fitness trainers and instructors.
